IEEE uses a numeric citation system with references in square brackets. Sources are numbered in the order they first appear in the text. The same number is reused for repeat citations. The reference list, titled 'References', is arranged numerically. Author names use initials before the surname (e.g., J. A. Smith), which is the reverse of Vancouver.

Note: IEEE citation numbers appear in square brackets, on the line (not superscript). Citation numbers are typically placed before the sentence-ending punctuation. Do not use author names in citations unless you choose to mention them naturally in the sentence.
